This is a picture of my BMW which I bought new in March 1993. In the 3 years I owned it, it shredded no less than 2 camshaft timing belts at a cost of around DM 7.000 - even though the service intervals were adhered to.
BMW admitted that the belt was a design error and have since returned to using a timing chain to drive the camshaft. Admittedly with it´s M-Technic suspension it was a beautiful car to drive but that´s no real consolation for having a terminally empty wallet....
The Motto of this story - don´t buy a BMW with belt driven camshafts unless you´ve plenty of money to replace the top end each time the belt snaps causing the pistons to make contact with the valves......
